6Ts: Six ways to get your webOS phone working

Welcome

Is your device not working the way you expect it to? Has it stopped responding to taps? Is one of your applications not responding or behaving strangely?
These problems can be pretty easy to fix.
Here are six different troubleshooting methods - 6Ts - that you can try, on your own, to get your device working again.
  • Throw all open applications off the top of the screen
  • Turn your device completely off and on
  • Triple-toggle restart
  • Top off the battery
  • Take out the battery (if possible)
  • Tether your device to your computer and reinstall webOS
IMPORTANT: Try each method in the order it’s presented to see if it solves your problem. When the problem is solved, Stop.

Step 1: Throw all open applications off the top of the screen

Note If the screen is off and you can’t turn it on, or if gestures don’t work, skip to 3: Triple-toggle restart.

  1. If you’re working in an application that’s displayed full-screen and it isn’t responding, flick up from the gesture area to send the app to Card view.
  2. Throw the app off the top of the screen to close it.
  3. Throw any other open applications off the top of the screen to close them.

Why this might help

One or more of your open applications could be reserving so much memory that there’s not enough memory left to do real work. Closing apps can free up enough memory so you can continue working.

Step 2: Turn your device completely off and on

Note If the screen is off and you can’t turn it on, or if gestures don’t work, skip to 3: Triple-toggle restart.

For Smartphone users

  1. Press and hold the power button
  2. Tap Power, and then tap Restart.
For Touchpad users

  1. • Open Device Info and tap Reset Options. Tap Shut Down, and tap Shut Down again.
  2. • Press and hold the power button and tap Shut Down.

Tip An occasional restart can be good for your device, just the way a restart can be good for your computer. Every once in a while, restart your device.

Why this might help

Restarting your device closes all applications, frees up all memory, and reinitializes all your wireless services (phone, Bluetooth® technology, and Wi-Fi if available). It’s a fresh start.

Step 3: Triple-toggle/force restart

Palm Pre

Palm Pixi

  1. Press and hold the power button
  2. While still holding down power, slide the ringer switch three times. Wait a few seconds for the restart to begin.
Or try the 3-key restart: sPress and hold these keys Option + Symbol + R and then release them all at once. Wait 10 seconds.

     HP Touchpad

    1. Press and hold the power button together with the center button for 15 seconds. OR press and hold the power button only, and press the center button for 15 times while holding down the power button.

    Why this might help

The triple-toggle restart frees up memory and closes all running applications. It also reinitializes any wireless services on your device (phone, Bluetooth® technology or Wi-Fi if available).
Tip Because open applications are forced to close immediately during this kind of restart, some unsaved data may be lost.

Step 4: Top off the battery

    1. Connect your USB cable to the AC charger and to your device.
    2. Plug the AC charger into a working electric outlet.
    3. Let the battery recharge completely.
Please refer to the manual to get details on how to charge your device

    Why this might help

Fully charging the battery ensures your device is not conserving power due to a low battery

Step 5: Take out the battery (if possible)

Note If your device has a non-removable battery, skip to 6: Tether and reinstall webOS.
Important Don’t try this method until you’ve already tried the four Ts before this. Because open applications are forced to close immediately, some unsaved data may be lost.

    1. Try shutting down the phone: Press and hold the power button. Tap Power > Shut Down/Swap Battery > Shut Down.
    2. Take out the battery, wait about 5 seconds, and then reinsert it. This causes your device to restart.

    Why this might help

Reinserting the battery performs a restart and also triggers an automatic clean-up of files that weren’t closed properly.

Step 6: Tether your device to your computer and reinstall webOS

Note Don’t try this method until you’ve already tried the five Ts before this.
    1. On a Windows or Mac computer, go to palm.com/rom.
    2. Follow the steps to put your device into USB update mode and run webOS Doctor.
    3. When the update is complete, restore your backed up data and sync relationships. See How to restore data after an update.

    Why this might help

Installing the latest version of the webOS platform wipes and refreshes all memory. Your preferences and installed software are not affected.
